Martin was round last night, and amidst the drunken revelry we managed to nail down a running order for the first issue of Free State. We’re bringing our fairly poor design skills to bear on actually putting the thing together now – very exciting after all the time and effort that’s gone into it. Remember, if you want to sign up to receive the issue, goto the Free State site (follow the link to the right) and enter your details – and pass it on to anyone you think might be interested! The first issue is one thing, but we really want to keep the momentum going for the second.
I’ve been offered Kristin Hersh’s memoir to review for The Skinny, which is immensely pleasing. I saw Hersh play at Oran Mor in Glasgow three or four years ago, and it must be one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, made all the more extraordinary by the intimate setting. Everything will get dropped to read and review it as soon as it comes in the post, and I’ll link to it when it goes up on The Skinny’s website.
Finally, World Book Night seems to have been a success. I missed most of the programmes surrounding it on the BBC because I was too busy drinking, but the day before I did practice what I preached and bought a copy of Doris Lessing’s “The Golden Notebook” from the Hyndland Bookshop and gave it to someone I knew would appreciate it. I hope most regular readers of this site will have done the same.
